Roulette, from board to result

Roulette begins with the numbered layout and ends after the dealer closes betting and the ball settles in a pocket. The result applies to the selections already accepted for that spin.

Read the grid first

The layout contains individual numbers and group selections. A straight-up bet is on one number; other areas cover groups such as a colour, odd or even, a dozen, or a column. The names and payouts on the table information matter more than copying another player’s chip placement.

There is no prize for knowing every term at once. Read the sequence and give yourself permission to stop at the point you have understood.

Know when action stops

Live roulette is not settled when a player first reaches for a chip. The dealer accepts bets during the betting window and calls “no more bets” before the result is settled. Keep your hands clear of the layout after that call. The ball landing in a pocket determines the result under that table’s rules.

A table can be watched before it is joined, which is often the easiest way to see how the written rules meet the pace of play.

Each spin stands alone

A previous sequence of reds, blacks or numbers does not alter the random result of the next spin. Check the wheel version and table minimum with the casino if you are considering a visit, because versions and limits can differ.

If you decide to see the game in person, check current entry, access and timetable information with the venue before you travel. Keep those arrangements separate from your gambling budget.

The table may have its own chip procedure and minimum. Read the posted information before you exchange money or make a selection.
